Sony is ending production of several PlayStation 4 models, according to Japanese retailer

Out with the old and in with the new.

The PlayStation 5 is still incredibly difficult to find, so some consumers may look to buying the older PlayStation 4 console. However, they may be out of luck if they were interested in specific models of the console. Sony seems to be discontinuing a plethora of different models of this generation, cutting off production and possibly focusing on the future.

The initial sighting of this discontinuation comes from a Twitter post of a store in Japan. According to the tweet, these different models of the PlayStation 4 will no longer be manufactured by Sony.

What exactly could be the reasoning behind the discontinuation? It is possible that while these specific models were popular for promoting the PS4, they are no longer necessary. What is interesting is that it seems all models of the original PlayStation 4 will not be produced. It is possible that while Sony will still produce some PlayStation 4 consoles, they will only be the Pro models.

PlayStation 4 Pro Glacier White

The main push for this discontinuation is to promote the transition from the older generation to the PlayStation 5. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan spoke about the rollout of the PS5 and stated the Sony team’s goal was to bring gamers to the new console. “One of our tasks — probably our main task — is to take that community and transition it from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, and at a scale and pace that we’ve never delivered on before,” said Ryan.

While different variations of the console, specifically Glacier White variants, won’t be available, you don’t have to worry about the system as a whole being discontinued for a very long time. However, if Glacier White is your speed, better pick it up before it’s too late.
