Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is finally out, bringing one of the best games from the Nintendo Wii U onto the Switch. While the 3D World side of things is mostly the same as before, the Bowser’s Fury mode definitely changes things up. However, what is different on both sides of the game is that the title now supports online multiplayer, so you do not have to be stuck playing alone or only with friends locally. If you have a friend with a Switch nearby, you can also play by connecting both of your consoles together. Here is how to access online or local wireless multiplayer play in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.
First, choose what mode you want to play. Keep in mind that Bowser’s Fury only supports two players at a time, while 3D World is up to four. Also, two people can play on a single Switch console at a time via this method. Finally, if you are playing online, you will need to be friends with the host to access their lobby.
Start up the game and choose your character so you get to the level select screen. On this screen, press the R button to bring up the below image.
Whoever is hosting the game will be the save file you will all be playing on. If one person is further in the game and you want access to those levels, they will need to host. While you play through these levels, the host will keep their progress, but any guests will not receive any progress to their save files at all.
If you want to, you can set a password. It is only a three-digit password, so it is easy to give out, and since you need to be friends with the host to enter, there is no danger in accidentally joining someone else’s lobby. If you are in a secluded area, just creating a lobby with no password is fine.
After the host has created the lobby, they will be in the character select screen below. As more people join, they will populate and choose whatever character they wish to play as. When everyone has chosen their character, the game can begin.
