FIFA is one of the most successful series in all of gaming. It continues to chug along year after year with new games that continue to drive big sales for EA Sports.

Currently, the game has no cross-platform play. That’s despite it being on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, and most recently Nintendo Switch. If you want to play with your friends, you’ll have to make sure you have the same console first.

Cross-platform play is very much in the minds of players right now, particularly because of the outcry over how Sony is handling Fortnite. Accounts used to play the game on PlayStation are locked from being used on Switch, despite the accounts being third-party Epic Games accounts.

That got people thinking—what about FIFA? Well, it turns out EA has been thinking about it too.

“It’s something we’ve looked at,” FIFA creative director Matt Prior told Eurogamer. “and it’s something we often talk about. There are a lot of issues to work through. I’m trying to be diplomatic here! There are a lot of issues to work through with various first parties. But Fortnite does that now with PC to consoles. From a consumer standpoint, it makes the community that much broader, which makes it that much more compelling.”

If you’d asked me that a few years ago I’d probably have said, ‘it’s not going to happen. We’ll monitor and see.’ I think it would be a net benefit to the users.”

Okay, so it’s not super encouraging for the near future. But it shows that EA is at least considering the possibility. Now the game is on Nintendo Switch, it would seem like the time is right. Players might want to play mostly on a traditional console, but also access their account on the go.
