Every unused type combo in Pokémon, ranked

I (want to) choose you!

Over the years, The Pokémon Company and Game Freak have created over a thousand Pokémon out of the 18 types they have. Some might surprise you — Volcanion (seen at the top of this article) is the only one to carry both Fire and Water typing. That being said, there are still some that have never been used for whatever reason. Plenty of evolutionary lines and regional forms get wild with their typing, but not every combination is covered. We’ve ranked all the unused ones and thought about what they might offer were they to actually appear in the future. Here are all of the unused type combos in Pokémon ranked from worst to best.

All unused type combos in Pokémon, ranked from worst to best

9. Normal/Bug

In all honesty, we can understand why this dual-typing hasn’t been used yet. Normal type isn’t the most exciting, as it’s designed to be a balanced, all-around category, and Bug in general is pretty weak to begin with. The design is really all Bugs have going for them, so turning them into basic creatures is really the last thing we want.

8. Normal/Rock

Similar to the previous entry, there isn’t much room for this combo to really succeed. All it would do is leave whatever sorry Pokémon is made highly susceptible to Fighting attacks, which would easily make it one of the worst choices in any entry. If they wanted to make a pathetic joke Pokémon, that would probably be the best scenario for this.

7. Normal/Steel

Let’s just face it, Normal-type combos are boring. What really makes a Steel Pokémon stand out if it gains Normal? If there were to be any Normal/Steel already, it would probably be Klefki, but even that being one of the most unpopular Pokémon didn’t get this curse.

6. Normal/Ice

Rounding out the sorry Normal dual-typing is one that we could actually see happen. We already have bipedal Ice Pokémon like Mr. Rime, who tap dances. What if there was a figure skater Normal and Ice-type? We could see some popularity come from a Pokémon like that.

5. Ice/Poison

It is kind of hard for us to imagine what an Ice and Poison Pokémon would look like, and that is likely why it hasn’t happened yet. If anything, our best bet would be some kind of glacier that is covered in sludge, but we feel like there are plenty of similar Pokémon with those ideas already.

4. Bug/Dragon

There are already a couple of dragonfly Pokémon who took on Bug and Flying, so that might not be the route to go here. There definitely is room, though, for some other kind of Bug and Dragon combo to work. Maybe a land-based insect like a beetle with tough skin.

3. Ground/Fairy

The Fairy-type has been very popular since its inception in Pokémon X and Y. That being said, there are a couple combos that have yet to be used. A Ground and Fairy Pokémon could be something that pushes the message on climate change. Some kind of Fern Gully creature that has a tragic backstory of its habitat being destroyed.

2. Rock / Ghost

A living tombstone makes too much sense to us for it not to have been used yet in Pokémon. This seems like the perfect opportunity for Spiritomb to get an evolution in the future.

1. Fire/Fairy

Primarina is a Pokémon that combines Fairy and Water type in a circus seal. When we think of possible Fire and Fairy combos, we think first to people who eat fire off of sticks at a circus. The first thing we thought of was a big bear holding a fire stick, swallowing it, and then spewing flames forward. We really want that.
