If one were so inclined, now is as good a time as any to praise the sun. Rumors had been swirling all day, but at Nintendo Direct Mini, Dark Souls: Remastered was formally announced for the Switch. The game was also confirmed for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

The game will support 4k resolution and 60fps on PC, PS4 Pro and Xbox One X and will released on May 25 of this year. The game will also support up to six players for online play. As of yet, we do not know how that will be split between cooperators and invaders. The game will include the original DLC as well, meaning players will also get the Artorias of the Abyss DLC included.

I’m excited, and I won’t even pretend otherwise. The Dark Souls series has long been a favorite of mine, and at this point its cultural and design impact on the industry are well known. Often incorrectly described as unfairly difficult, the series is known for granting players ample opportunity to fail, punishing them for their own hubris and greed.

The original Dark Souls possessed some of the series’ best world design, but looking back can be let down by some clunkiness, occasional ugliness, and a rather poor PC port. The remaster aims to solve the game’s problems while keeping its incredible atmosphere and tone intact.

A Dark Souls: Remaster has long been something that the community has clamored for, and initial reaction on the internet is incredibly positive. Few games manage to instill the kind of loyalty in people that Dark Souls has. The interesting combination of deep philosophical themes and punishing gameplay has a surprise mass appeal for all kinds of gamers. I also hope the remaster can entice people who were maybe turned off by the original game’s issues.

I’ll be heading back to Lordran once again, will you?
