Niantic announced the return of the Water Event this summer featuring increased spawns of water type Pokémon. New Field Research will coincide with the event with three times Stardust for each water type catch, special 2km eggs, double candy and stardust for each hatch, and two new Shiny Variant Pokémon.
Niantic is bringing back one of the most popular summer time events to Pokémon GO.
Starting June 7 at 1:00 p.m. and ending June 21 at 1:00 p.m., water type Pokémon such as Marril will appear more frequently in the wild. A special Shiny Shellder will also be available to catch for the first time ever!
Not only will we see more water type Pokémon, but Field Research tasks will be highlighting the event as well. This is something Niantic has started doing to keep Field Research more interesting by matching quests to the event.
The changes don’t end there. Along with increased water type spawns, you will receive three times stardust for catching any water type Pokémon, and 2km eggs will hatch Pokémon like Totodile, Mudkip, and Corphish. As an added bonus, each egg you hatch will earn you double candy and stardust. While I do recommend using a Star Piece to gain 50 percent more stardust, I don’t recommend using Super Incubators to hatch those special 2km eggs. Save it for the 10km eggs.
Raid Battles will also feature water type Pokémon including the return of the legendary Pokémon Kyogre. While this may not be something to get excited about, if you’re one of the lucky few, you’ll also be able to catch the Shiny Variant of Kyogre.
My only concern with the water Event is that it will overlap with Pokémon GO Community Day on June 16. As we saw how scarce the spawns were for Charmander, I’m hoping that this event will not reduce the spawn rate of Larvitar in favor of water type Pokémon. Hopefully Niantic thought about this ahead of time.
