The Epic Mega Sale kicked off today, and you can pre-order Borderlands 3 for $10 less than usual. The sale features some deep discounts and games from publishers and developers but also includes a special discount from Epic themselves. Any purchase over $14.99 will receive a $10 discount directly from Epic, with nothing being taken from the profits of the developers and publishers.

The interesting part is that the extra discount applies to games that are on pre-order. As such, that $10 discount will work if you pre-order Borderlands 3. The sale will run from today until June 13, giving you plenty of time to decide if you want to buy into Borderlands 3 at this discounted price.

It’s a smart move from Epic. You could argue that they haven’t really given many people a reason to buy from their store yet unless you are incredibly loyal to one of the games they picked up as an exclusive. This will actually encourage people to get onto the Epic Game Store and have a look at what they have on offer.

Epic has been trying to make the store a good place for people to pick up games as they attempt to put pressure on Steam to reduce the share they take from publishers and developers. It’s not a plan that will work unless they can move a substantial amount of potential unit sales from Steam to Epic Game Store, however.

Moves like this, and some improvements to the store itself, are almost certain to play better with the consumer than exclusivity deals.
