Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night Patch 1.02 Halting Progress for Some Players

Patch 1.02, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night’s day one patch, is keeping some players from opening chests containing key items needed to progress through the game.

A single day after its release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, a patch for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has completely halted progress for some players. According to multiple threads on GameFAQs and Reddit, some players are reporting that patch 1.02 is keeping them from obtaining key items needed to progress from the game.

Specifically, when the patch dropped, it marked some locked chests containing these items as already having been opened. This error prevents players from opening them and receiving their contents. According to comments in threads regarding the issue, it appears that the bug can affect any chest in the game. The bug is somewhat widespread, but some players are confirming that their game is still running fine.

So far, the only reliable solution found to clear the issue is a pretty drastic one: players have to start an entirely new save file. The problem seems to hit when players load a save that saved before the patch, which triggers the mass unlocking. USgamer’s Eric Van Allen, who first reported the story, also found one player who claims to have found multiple copies of the missing items in different chests, though that doesn’t appear to be the case for everyone.

As you might expect, players who’ve had their progress halted by the bug aren’t happy, with many posting messages dismayed about having to “waste time” replaying the game. Others, though, are taking it in stride, seeming fine with replaying the parts of the game they’ve already seen. Considering that Bloodstained only came out yesterday, most players are only a few hours into the game. One user on GameFAQs wrote, “I read about this, this morning and started a new game. I was only 22% through the map and replaying it is already a blast!”

USgamer also reports that they’ve reached out to the game’s developer and publisher about the issue but haven’t yet received a response. We’ll continue following this story to see if the game’s developers discuss the problem or if any other workarounds pop up.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night will launch on Nintendo Switch on June 25, by which time the issue will hopefully get resolved.
