Apex Legends’ Season 2 is now live, starting the next phase of the popular battle royale game. The associated patch notes spell out the most significant changes that have come to the game since its launch last February.

The largest — or at least most noticeable — change coming to Season 2 is the introduction of the new hero, Wattson. More than just a new character, Wattson represents an essential step in the evolution of Apex Legends. She’s the game’s first completely defense-oriented hero, which is bound to shake up the existing meta, especially if her design is a sign of how future heroes could stray from the current status quo. Her abilities let her build electric fences to constrain enemy movement and Interceptor pylons to stop incoming projectiles.

PASSIVE: Spark of Genius

Ultimate Accelerants fully charge Wattson’s ultimate. Standing near the Interception Pylon boosts Wattson’s tactical recharge rate.

TACTICAL: Perimeter Security

Create electrified fences by connecting nodes. Fences damage and slow enemies.

ULTIMATE: Interception Pylon

Place an electrified pylon that destroys incoming ordnance and repairs damaged shields [can place up to 3 Pylons at one time].

Season 2 also introduces a new gun, the L-STAR EMG. Only available from airdrops, this weapon lets players fire away with plasma rounds, but overheats if they hold down the trigger too long. The update also introduces several new power-ups for existing weapons.

New Airdrop Weapon: L-STAR EMG

Fires large high-damage plasma projectiles

Will overheat if player fires for too long

Comes with its own limited ammo supply

Only available in Airdrops

New Hop-Up: Disruptor Rounds

Increased damage to shielded targets.

Compatibility: Alternator / RE-45

New Hop-Up: Hammerpoint Rounds

Increased damage to unshielded targets.

Compatibility: P2020, Mozambique.

New Attachments: Energy Mags

Increases magazine capacity.

Increases reload speed at rare and above.

Compatibility: Havoc, Triple Take, Devotion.

Reduced default mag sizes on compatible weapons.

The Kings Canyon map will also see a significant change this season. The Leviathans that previously lurked outside of the map’s explorable area have now broken onto the battlefield to give players a new obstacle to conquer.

Changes are coming outside of matches, too. Season 2 adds the Stats page, which will let players track their achievements and get a detailed breakdown of their performance across this and future seasons. It’s accessible from the Lobby, and Respawn says it will monitor feedback to see what other stats players may want to track.

The launch of Season 2 brings with it plenty of other changes. These are the most prominent new additions to the game, but the full patch notes include weapon tweaks, adjustments to existing characters, and plenty of other quality of life changes and bug fixes.
