Can you rename characters in Final Fantasy VII Remake?

Spoiler alert: There's no changing Aerith to Aeris.

One of the coolest features with Final Fantasy games of old is that it allowed you to rename almost all of the playable characters once they become available to add to your party. This means that rather than exploring the map with the likes of Cloud, Barret, Tifa, and Aerith, you were able to name your teams to anything you wanted to give the game a personal touch.

The characters all keep their original names in most Final Fantasy games outside of being given a name to allow players to easily recognize anyone, but it was a great touch in the original Final Fantasy VII to explore the story with characters named as friends.

However, in Final Fantasy VII Remake, it does not appear that you will have this option. Within about five minutes of gameplay, you can see that the characters are using their original names with no option to change them when Avalanche members Jessie and Biggs confirm that the main character is named Cloud. While Barret isn’t introduced formally as he is in the original, other characters call out his name throughout the first mission.

This is the case throughout the game as the entire saga is accompanied by voice-overs. It would be incredibly difficult to have a full voice script without mentioning characters by name. This wasn’t an issue in the original as all communication was done with text. However, for Final Fantasy VII Remake, you’re going to have to make do with the cast’s original names.
