How to get Pretty Good Tools Recipes in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

The best early upgrade.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

When you first arrive on your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you will get access to some basic tools. These flimsy versions will allow you to get the job done, be harvest wood, or smashing up rocks, but they will break often, which is annoying. The good news is, you can get much better tools.

When you are doing jobs for the other residents, finding your own resources, and most importantly, talking to everyone each day, eventually someone will mention that they read a good book about getting some pretty good tools. This is a clue to let you know that an upgrade path is available for those tools that keep on breaking.

Nook Kiosk

If you go and visit the Resident Services tent, and interact with the little kiosk in the front right corner, you will be able to spend your Nook Miles on certain items. Nooks Miles are earned just by playing the game and hitting certain milestones. You can check them in your Nook Phone, and they will always tell you what the next goal is. They are very easy to earn, so it won’t take you long to start racking them up.

You can buy the Pretty Good Tools Recipes for 3000 Nook Miles, and these will give you a way to craft better shovels, axes, fishing rods, and all the other tools that you need. For most of them, you will need to craft the flimsy version, then upgrade them with extra materials, like iron nuggets.

They are much better tools to work with, and you won’t have to worry about remaking them all the time. While it is expensive at 3000 Nook Miles, it is one of the best early purchases that you can make in the game.
