To build a strong secondary that will shut down the opposing team’s offense, it takes more than just having good corners. Safeties set the tone for the rest of the secondary, meaning that you will want to be deep in those positions in order to succeed in Madden Ultimate Team. So who are the best base safeties in MUT? Here’s our list of the six best base MUT safeties in Madden 21, starting with the free safeties.
Free Safeties
Devin McCourty
The highest-rated (85) base free safety in Madden Ultimate Team, Patriots S Devin McCourty, has a number of tools in his skill set that makes him a valuable defensive back. The former Super Bowl champion also possesses solid Speed (84) and Acceleration (85) attributes, both of which are very good for base cards. In addition, McCourty also has exception Play Recognition (88) and Zone Coverage (88) attributes, making him a reliable safety in Cover 3 and Cover 4 plays. Devin McCourty might be the most expensive base free safety, but there’s a reason for that: the Patriots free safety is a very valuable player to have.
Minkah Fitzpatrick
Prioritizing value when building your MUT team is important, as sometimes, the most expensive card is not the best one to buy. Steelers S Minkah Fitzpatrick might not cost as much as other free safeties like Kevin Byard or Justin Simmons, but you will probably get more value out of the former Alabama defensive back. Fitzpatrick has solid running attributes (84 Speed and 87 Acceleration), much like Devin McCourty, and his Play Recognition (81) and Zone Coverage (83) rating are on par with the better safeties in MUT.Â
Justin Reid
Texas FS Justin Reid has a few similarities to Minkah Fitzpatrick, as he has rather good Speed (86) and Acceleration (85) ratings. In fact, Reid’s running attributes put him ahead of other safeties that have higher overall ratings than him, making him not just a good value grab, but also a strong user option. Reid’s weakness do, however, come with his Play Recognition (77) and Zone Coverage (77) attributes. Nevertheless, if you’re looking for a free safety to user in the secondary, Justin Reid might be worth a look.
Strong Safeties
Harrison Smith
The Vikings have built a dominant defense in recent years, and arguably the best player on that front is S Harrison Smith. The highest-rated (86) base strong safety in Madden 21, Smith has exceptional Play Recognition (88) and Hit Power (85). The Notre Dame alumnus also has a high Zone Coverage (87) attribute, making him a great option if you’re needing a reliable zone defender.
Tyrann Mathieu
Chiefs FS Tyrann Mathieu might not have the same Hit Power (76) and Zone Coverage (84) attributes that Smith has, but there’s a lot to like with the “Honey Badger.” Mathieu has solid Speed (84) for a safety, meaning he should have no problem moving around in the secondary. Mathieu’s value, though, comes in his Man Coverage (84) attribute, the highest among Core Elite strong safeties. Considering his balanced ratings, it’s no wonder as to why Tyrann Mathieu is so valuable.

Jamal Adams
Seahawks S Jamal Adams is right up there among the best strong safeties in the NFL. The 6’1’’ safety has some impressive running attributes (85 Speed & 84 Acceleration), as well as a good Zone Coverage (84) rating. Adams can also hang with opposing wide outs in Man Coverage, thanks to his 80 rating on that front. But what might be Adams’ most valuable asset is his ability to jar balls loose. The former Jet has a Hit Power rating of 88, the highest among Core Elite strong safeties. If you can get Jamal Adams on your squad, do it.
