Metro Exodus is a very fun, engrossing, and challenging game. As you try to lead Artyom and the rest of the Spartans through a cruel and often violent world, you will need to use every trick in the book to survive, gather the best equipment, and achieve your goals. In this guide, we’ll run through 10 important tips for people who are new to the game. These should help you survive a little longer, no matter what kind of situation you find yourself in.

10 Tips For Playing Metro Exodus

1. Burn Cobwebs

You often be crawling through buildings, tunnels, or caves that haven’t been used in years. There will be a blanket of think heavy cobwebs on just about everything. By taking out your cigarette lighter, you can burn these away. It sounds like a small thing, but if you get ambushed by a pack of mutants you will need to be able to move fast to survive, so burn the cobwebs away as you encounter them. It might just save your life!

2. Use Binoculars To Scan The Area

Early in the campaign you will find some binoculars. These are extremely useful, not only because they allow you to check out camps and buildings from a distance, but also because they will automatically mark areas of interest on your map. These areas can contain interesting items and resources, or even special items that will impact the story. Always be sure to have a good look around the area as you move through to make sure you don’t miss anything!

3. Use Safehouses To Change Time Of Day

Safehouses can be found scattered around each area, and will contain a bed that you can use to sleep in. This allows you to alter the time of day, which can be very important, depending on your goals. Bandits are more active during the day, but mutants are more active at night. Use this to reduce the difficult of what you are doing. It is much better to attack bandits at night, while anything involving mutants is best tackled during the day.

4. Holster Your Weapon

As you move around the world, you will run into all sorts of people. Some will be enemies, but there will also be pockets of friendly people that you can meet. When you run into them, be sure to holster your weapons. They will appreciate this show of respect and it will be easier to interact with them. How you play the game also matters to the ending, so trying not to intimidate people can pay off in the end.

5. Get The Nightvision Googles

In the first area, you will learn about a bandit camp from an NPC. Make sure you visit this spot and clear it out, then rescue the two people they have caged up there. One of them will give you a key as thanks. This key will allow you access to a room in the Tsar Fish Temple that contains night vision goggles. This is an extremely important item. Your flashlight is great, but will also give away your position to enemies. For higher difficulties, having access to night vision is vital.

6. The Tikhar Rifle Is Your Best Friend

The Tikhar Rifle that you get from one of your Spartan friends is a very important weapon. It can be upgraded to become very effective, is very silent for when you need to be sneaky, and you can make ammunition for it while in the field, without using a workbench. Finding somewhere to hide and make some ammo saved my bacon quite a few times in the game.

7. KOs Make Less Noise Than Executions

While the idea of stabbing a bandit repeatedly in the neck might appeal to you, it does make a lot of noise compared to just giving them a boop on the head and sending them into a nice sleep. KO’d bandits don’t wake up, so you have nothing to fear on that front, and then more humane option might stop other bandits from hearing what is happening. Finally, not stabbing the hell out of everyone you meet, especially bandits who surrender to you, will help you achieve a better ending.

8. Quicksave Often

In the post apocalyptic world of Metro Exodus, things can go wrong, and fast. As such, use the Quicksave function often. If you feel like a fight is coming up, be sure to save because you cannot save during combat. Sometimes things will just go wrong, and being able to jump back five minutes might make a huge difference.

9. Take Your Time

While the game does have survival elements, you don’t need to worry about food and water. This allows you to take as long as you want to explore things, and you really should try and visit as much of the map as possible. It is easy to miss useful items, or suddenly find yourself running low on supplies. By taking your time, checking rooms and buildings, and listening carefully to the world around you, you should be able to stay safer and find more resources.

10. Your Journal Is On The Back Of Your Map

Honestly, this stumped me for a little bit when I was playing the game. Your map is great because it shows you areas of interest in the game, but your journal can contain useful information that Artyom records as the game progresses. Be sure to turn your map over and give your journal a read from time to time, to ensure you don’t miss out on anything.
