Some Pokémon can only be defeated by Dragon types. Here are the best options in Ultra Sun and Moon.
Dragon-type Pokémon were once the strongest type Pokémon in the game—and then Pokémon X and Y came along.
In a competitive format dominated by Fairy-type Pokémon, a Dragon-type Pokémon’s biggest weakness, choosing the right Dragon-type Pokémon for your team that can survive a fairy onslaught is vital to your success. Some Pokémon can only be defeated by Dragon-types, meaning players need to micromanage their team to save their Dragon-type for when they need it most.
Arguably, Dragon-type Pokémon have become weaker since the introduction of Fairy-type Pokémon in X and Y and would have been forgotten about if not for one feature—Mega Evolution. Some of the strongest dragons on this list rely heavily on Mega Evolution to get the best out of their abilities while others can survive on raw skill alone.
All Pokémon in this list are catchable in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon. Some stronger Water-type Pokémon, however, can be transferred from another game in the Pokémon series to Pokémon Ultra and Moon through the Pokémon Bank if you want to use something else. Pokémon Bank is available on the Nintendo 3DS eshop for a small yearly rental charge.
Ultra Necrozma
Type: Psychic/Dragon
Ultra Necrozma is the combination of Necrozma and either Solgaleo or Lunala. Players can Mega Evolve these combinations in battle to gain access to Ultra Necrozma.
This Dragon-type Pokémon is arguably the best Pokémon in the entire game and in all Pokémon games ever released. It has the highest base-stats of any other Pokémon, letting it deal a ton of damage to whoever it is up against. Even against Fairy-type Pokémon, Ultra Necrozma can hold its ground.
It also has access to an exclusive Z-Move that can destroy nearly every other Pokémon in one hit. In some instances, the Z-Move can take a full health Pokémon down to zero HP in a matter of seconds.
Rayquaza
Type: Dragon/Flying
Players can find Rayquaza in a Red Ultra Wormhole if the player has a Kyogre and Groudon in their party. It is level 60, so be sure to come prepared.
Rayquaza was the best Dragon-type Pokémon ever until Ultra Necrozma came along—but it is still pretty good for every team composition imaginable.
Just like Ultra Necrozma, Rayquaza is best used in its Mega Evolution form. In this form, Rayquaza gains access to the ability Delta Stream, which is arguably the strongest ability in all of the Pokémon games.
Delta Stream causes moves that would be super effective against pure Flying-type Pokémon to deal neutral damage instead. This allows players to use a Flying-type Pokémon against its weakest matchup with no consequence. The ability also stops an opposing Pokémon from using moves that would change the weather, such as Rain Dance and Sunny Day.
Kommo-o
Type: Dragon/Fighting
In order to get Kommo-o, players will need to catch either a Jangmo-o or a Hakamo-o from Vast Poni Canyon and evolve it to level 45. It will then evolve into a Kommo-o.
In Sun and Moon, Kommo-o was one of the weakest Dragon-type Pokémon. It was incredibly weak and could be taken down in a few hits from any type of move.
In Ultra Sun and Moon, however, Kommo-o received a buff. It gained access to the move Close Combat, which can deal a ton of damage to an opposing Pokémon and in general, is a lot tougher than it once was.
Kommo-o is one of the more risky picks in the metagame. It is fun to use in a casual play but for a competitive ready team, you might want to go elsewhere.
Salamence
Type: Dragon/Flying
Players can find a Bagon in Route 3 or Kala’e Bay. It can then evolve into a Salamence once it reaches level 50.
Slamence’s strength come from two distinct abilities.
By having its special ability be Intimidate, Salamence can weaken the attack stat of opposing Pokémon, making them significantly weaker. This is vital in double battles as it can turn the tide of the match to your favor with the right setup.
The other distinct ability, just like Rayquaza and Necrozma, is its ability to Mega Evolve. When it Mega Evolves, Salamence becomes a tank for your team that is able to deal out tons of damage, its speed also increases meaning you can strike hard and fast against an opposing team.
Naganadel
Type: Poison/Dragon
Naganadel is a Pokémon exclusive to Ultra Sun and Moon. Players will be given UB Adhesive after completing the game by the Ultra Recon Squad. UB Adhesive can then be evolved into Naganadel by leveling it up when it knows the move Dragon Pulse.
Naganadel is the only Pokémon on the list that is not weak to Fairy-type moves. Due to its unique dual typing, Fairy-type moves only deals regular damage to Naganadel instead of being super effective, making it the ideal Dragon-type for your competitive team.
It is probably the strongest competitively viable Dragon-type on this list. Both Ultra Necrozma and Rayquaza are banned in competitive play, leaving the door open for Nagandel to fill a slot that would otherwise be taken by one of the two legendary Pokémon.
