Fortnite, like many large multiplayer games, uses online accounts to keep track of who is playing, allowing players to download the game, and do things like purchasing premium currency with credit cards. Because of this, it is important to ensure that your account is protected. To this end, Epic Games offer a method of protecting your account that goes beyond a simple password.
What Is Two Factor Authentication?
Two Factor Authentication is best viewed as a backup six-digit password that will be randomly generated and sent to you when you try to log in. Should someone manage to get your password and email, and log in pretending to be you, they will be asked for an additional code because they are attempting to log on from a new device. This code is sent to you, by a method of your choosing. Without the code, the other person would be unable to prove that their attempt to log in was authorized, so they would not be able to do so.
How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication
Two-Factor Authentication, or 2FA for short, adds a layer of security to your Epic Games account by requesting a six-digit code to be entered during every login. This code can either come from an Authenticator App, such as Authy, or from your email. Each time you log in, you’ll be prompted for this code.
To enable 2FA on your Fortnite account, head to the Epic Games account page, then click on the Password and Security tab and scroll all the way to the bottom. Click on your preferred method and follow the steps after clicking either the Enable Authenticator App or Enable Email Authentication. You can only configure one of the two options. If you choose the Authenticator App, you will get some instructions on how to download it, then you will need to scan a QR code on your phone.
You can also go straight to Epic’s 2FA page, and follow the instructions there.
What If I Already Enabled 2FA?
If you’ve already got email two-factor authentication enabled, you may want to switch to the authenticator app version. You’ll need to disable the email authentication first; then you can enable the authenticator app option.
It’s an excellent idea for Epic Games to promote the extra level of security that two-factor authentication provides, especially in a game as high-profile as Fortnite. To find out what other accounts you can secure with two-factor authentication, check out this list.
