Is Don’t Starve Together Cross-Platform/Crossplay?

Don't Starve Together has become a classic favorite for survival fans in the past decade, but does it offer crossplay?

Don’t Starve Together has multiplayer mechanics, but does it have cross-platform or crossplay across multiple platforms? This would allow players on all systems not to starve together, creating more ways to enjoy the adorable, survival sim.

The original Don’t Starve is a survival game with the objective listed in the title, as the protagonist must stay alive for as long as possible. The game launched in 2013 without a multiplayer mode, but luckily, fans didn’t have to wait long, as a separate multiplayer iteration, called Don’t Starve Together, was released at the end of 2014. This allowed a group to work together to stave off the elements.

Does Don’t Starve Together Have Cross-Platform/Crossplay?

Don’t Starve and Don’t Starve Together are available on multiple platforms, with versions on PC, Linux, PS3, PS4, PSVita, Wii U, iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S through backward compatibility. Don’t Starve isn’t exactly a demanding game in terms of hardware, so, unsurprisingly, it’s on so many systems.

Despite this, Don’t Starve Together almost completely lacks cross-platform or crossplay. This means that players are limited to multiplayer with people using the same platform. The only exceptions are the Windows, Mac, and Linux ports, which can play with each other but not with the console or mobile versions.

Sadly, it’s unlikely that Don’t Starve Together will receive cross-platform or crossplay. The base game is over a decade old at this point, and if the developers were unable/unwilling to add cross-platform or crossplay during the shift to PS5 & Xbox Series X/S generation, then it’s unlikely to happen at this stage in the game. We’d love to be proven wrong, however.

It’s a shame that Don’t Starve Together lacks cross-platform or crossplay, but at least the game is extremely cheap, often dropping to low prices during sales, and it’s available on lots of systems. The people who are truly determined to survive in the wilderness together will hopefully be able to do so with the resources available to them.
