Is Melmetal good, and how to best use it in Pokémon Go

Where does Melmetal fit into the Pokémon Go meta?

There are a handful of mythical Pokémon you can encounter in Pokémon Go, and Melmetal is one of them. You can find its starting form, Meltan, when you open a Mystery Box, which spawn during specific times in the mobile game. You can evolve Meltan into Melmetal once you earn enough candies, turning it into a powerful Steel-type Pokémon. What makes this Pokémon such a good choice, though? Here’s what you need to know about how to best use Melmetal in Pokémon Go and if it’s good.

How to best use Melmetal in Pokémon Go

Melmetal is a Steel-type. It will be weak against Fighting, Fire, and Ground-type moves, but it is resistant to Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Grass, Ice, Normal, Poison, Psychic, Rock, and other Steel-type moves. Because of how many unique attacks it can resist, Melmetal is challenging to take down, but it is exceptionally weak against any Fire, Fighting, or Ground-type attacks your opponent might use against you.

Should you place Melmetal on your team, protecting against any potential Fire, Fighting, or Ground-type attacks or Pokémon is essential, which means teaming it up alongside specific Pokémon, such as Ghost, Rock, Water, or Psychic-types. The types of Pokémon you team up with Melmetal will depend on what Pokémon Battle League you participate in, and Melmetal can participate in several unique ones.

For example, if you’re using Melmetal in the Great League, Noctowl, Trevenant, Pelipper, Medicham, Mantine, Pidgeot, or Altaria would be good options. When you’re participating in the Ultra League, we’d recommend adding Pidgeot, Regirock, Swampert, Aurorus, Tapu Fini, Jellicent, or Walrein to a team with it. Finally, if you participate in the Master League, some good choices to use alongside Melmetal include Dragonite, Slgaleo, Mamoswine, Zarude, Swampert, Hydreigon, Garchomp, or Ursaluna, to name a few.

What makes Melmetal such a great Pokémon is that it can regularly participate in all of these leagues, which means you want to have multiple of them in your collection. It can take time to build them up, but they’re worthwhile options for you in Pokémon Go.

To properly optimize on Melmetal, the best moveset to teach it will be the fast move Thunder Shock and the charged moves Superpower and Double Iron Bash. There are a handful of other charged attacks that Melmetal can learn, but these are the ones that yield the best results.

Is Melmetal good in Pokémon Go?

Melmetal is an excellent Pokémon, and we cannot recommend it enough for any trainer to use if they’re competing in the Great League, Ultra League, or the Master League PvP categories. You may also want to save one of some of the more unique Cups, such as the Fantasy Cup.

Melmetal will also be a highly recommended choice for any PvE encounters, which means using it in raids against powerful Pokémon or when battling Team Rocket.
