Super Mario Bros. 35 – battle royale gameplay, release date, and more

You know a new, unique genre is here to stay when Nintendo takes a crack at it. That can be said with battle royales and the tech giant’s latest reveal of Super Mario Bros. 35. The game is an online edition of the original NES classic, where a user will be one of 35 players looking to last the longest in nostalgic Mario levels. However, like a terrible royale player, the game itself will not last too long.

Gameplay

The concept does appear very simplistic, almost like something of a Fall Guys. There are a few features that separate this title nicely from others. For one, every user will be playing each level separately from each other, but you can watch their progress on the sides of your screen. However, this does not mean that you won’t be able to affect their chances of winning. AI enemies that you defeat can instantaneously be sent to wreak havoc on another player of your choosing. This will prove most beneficial when going up against someone further along than everyone else in the competition.

According to the details in the announcement trailer, Super Mario Bros. 35 seems to be incorporating some sort of progression or battle pass system. In the footage, it displays the victor winning coins and leveling up their rank. It isn’t known yet what these coins unlock, but they can also be earned by collecting them throughout a level.

Release date

Strangely enough, the game isn’t here to stay. Super Mario Bros. 35 will be available on October 1, 2020, but the trailer indicates that it is only playable until March 31, 2021. Unlike Nintendo’s other limited-edition game, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, it looks as if users cannot access the game in any offline capabilities once support for the game is over. So, if you have any interest in the title, don’t procrastinate.

Where to play

There is good news, however. It will be free for those with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription and can be played through either the SNES or NES emulator apps. Those without a membership will not have a way to purchase the game through the eShop, but Nintendo does offer seven-day trials for the online service if you want to give the game a try when it releases.
