SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake was announced during THQ Nordic’s 10th Anniversary Showcase live stream. Cosmic Shake serves as a spiritual successor to the fan-favorite SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom and will release for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The game is highly anticipated by fans of the square sponge, with many fans anxiously waiting for the release date for the game.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake Release Date

The announcement trailer for the game is a cinematic video that shows off SpongeBob going through different portals and turning into alternate versions of himself. He’s being followed around by a tiny Patrick Star floating next to him, and they meet alternate versions of their friends. Characters like Sandy Cheeks, Plankton, Squidward, Mr. Crabs, and Mrs. Puff are all shown in the trailer. References in the trailer include caveman SpongeBob, red karate gear SpongeBob, snail SpongeBob, and, of course, SpongeBob singing “Sweet Victory.” Most elements featured in the announcement trailer are based on memes and iconic moments from SpongeBob SquarePants.

The 2022 Showcase Trailer goes over the gameplay for the title, revealing the game will be similar to the Battle for Bikini Bottom game from 2003, a SpongeBob game so popular that it received an HD remake called Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated. The game will feature a mixture of platforming and hand-to-hand combat. The voice actors for the characters appear to reprise their roles for the game, based on Tom Kenny’s iconic SpongeBob voice delivery in the trailers.

THQ has been publishing licensed SpongeBob games for years, predating THQ’s becoming THQ Nordic in 2011. Cosmic Shake will be the first major SpongeBob game released on Console since SpongeBob HeroPants, a tie-in video game for The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, in 2015. No release date was given in either trailer, and THQ has made no other official announcements. Steam has the game listed as “Coming Soon.”
