Will next-gen PS5 and Xbox Series X games cost $70 each?

Pre-orders for NBA 2K21 suggest an increase could be industry-wide.

It’s fair to wonder as to whether the price for video games will be hiked up as the game industry transitions to the next generation of consoles. However, increases in prices don’t come very often, and for quite a while, the $60 price point has been standard. Now, though, a pre-order listing for NBA 2K21, may be an indication that gamers should expect a price increase once the next generation of consoles launches.

Pre-orders for NBA 2K21 went live on July 2, and gamers can not only pre-order it for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 at the standard $59.99, but also for the Xbox Series X and Playstation 5. What’s interesting here is that the price of the game for next-gen is USD $69.99, $10 more than what it will cost on current-gen.

This seems to confirm that gamers should expect an increase in price once the next generation of consoles, but that’s not necessarily going to be true in all cases. NBA 2K21 is the first next-gen game available for pre-order at the time of this writing, but we expect this pricing increase has been made with some behind-the-scenes industry cooperation, and that most AAA next-gen games will carry the $70 price tag.
