Netflix has used their time at San Diego Comic-Con to reveal the first teaser trailer for their upcoming series, The Witcher. Based on the books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, the series will follow the adventures of Geralt of Rivia. Don’t expect the series to have too much in common with the games, as it is going to follow more closely along to how events unfolded in the books.

At the end of their panel, featuring the series’ showrunner, and its stars, they revealed first look anyone has gotten of The Witcher. The trailer gives us our first look at Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer in action, and frankly, it looks much better than I expected. Like many people, I guess I worried about how the series would turn out, but the teaser trailer has certainly piqued my interest.

Henry Cavill stars as the show’s titular character, and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is leaning into the dark fantasy that has made the series a cult classic. The grey hair, wolf medallion, and general scowl are all present, and there are all sorts of magical moments and monsters on display. Also, Geralt only carries one sword. Before anyone gets mad, remember, it is based on the books.

“Geralt has a dichotomy of being very hard on the exterior because that’s how he thinks the world is,” Cavill said during the panel, “but deep, deep down there’s this man who has a belief of what the world can be.” Entertainment Tonight has a lengthy interview with the cast that you can watch on their Youtube channel.

The Witcher is due to release on Netflix later this year.
