The Pokemon Company has announced that Pokémon Go has been downloaded 1 billion times since its launch in 2016.

Pokémon Go went live to the public in the summer of 2016. It almost became an instant international sensation, with players all over the world playing the game. It brought communities together, and even people who didn’t grow up with Pokémon were playing the game. It isn’t as prevalent as it was at launch, yet millions worldwide continue playing it.

Serebii shared on Twitter that the Pokémon Company released a new trailer in Japan for Pokémon Go. The trailer has a small note that claims that Pokémon Go has reached 1 billion downloads since its launch in 2016.

Though it is an undeniably impressive achievement, 1 billion downloads do not necessarily mean 1 billion people have played. People are always getting new phones and re-downloading the app. Some fans would delete the app, only to re-download it later.

We don’t know if the Pokémon Company is counting re-downloads, but we wouldn’t be surprising since it helps inflate the numbers.

Still, whatever way you try to spin this, it means that millions of players have tried Pokémon Go. Those are impressive statistics for any game, mobile or not, would love to have.

Congratulations to Pokémon Go for this impressive milestone.
