For those yearning for an R-rated Mortal Kombat film with plenty pours of gore, you’re about to get your wish.

New Line Cinema has announced over the weekend that filming has begun on the latest film, starting in South Australia. Director Simon McQuoid is helming the movie, going from a script by Greg Russo.

The forthcoming reboot marks a considerable change of pace from the PG-13 Mortal Kombat films from the ’90s. Russo previously promised that the film features several characters from the franchise, along with a heaping amount of gore and fatalities.

Over the past couple of months, various cast members got slated to the film. These include The Raid alum Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, along with Power Rangers’ Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Josh Lawson as Kano, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion.

James Wan and Todd Garner will serve as producers on the project, and Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear, and Jeremy Stein are the executive producers.

There are no details about the film’s story right now. But it should be similar to the games, with Shang Tsung hosting a fighting tournament with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Sadly, we probably won’t see Christopher Lambert this time around. Maybe as a brief cameo?

Mortal Kombat releases on March 5, 2021, under New Line Cinema.
