Cyberpunk 2077 has sold over 13 million copies even after accounting for all refunds

Despite the criticism, Cyberpunk 2077 is selling like hot cakes.

Cyberpunk 2077 has been selling pretty well even after taking into account all the refunds which have been made in the past few days. Despite being one of the most anticipated games of the year, Cyberpunk 2077 has been receiving a lot of criticism lately due to the game’s poor optimization, especially on last-generation consoles.

In a recent regulatory announcement, CD Projekt Red has revealed that the game has sold over 13 million copies till the 20th of December. This includes both physical and digital sales, and also takes into account the refunds that took place until December 22nd.

CD Projekt Red had earlier started a “Help me Refund” campaign to help players who are unable to get a refund via retail. The cutoff date for requesting a refund via that was December 21. Before that, both Microsoft and Sony had altered their policies to allow players to get a refund for the game, with Sony even taking a step further by removing the game from the store altogether. CDPR mentions that the sales figure factors in refunds via all these methods.

It is further stated that the information is disclosed due to “its potential impact on investment-related decisions.” This is quite obvious, considering that investors have already been mulling suing the company for “materially misleading information.” The company’s share prices have already been plummeting since the game’s launch, with the owners estimated to have lost over $1 Billion in revenue.

Despite the widespread criticism and mass refunds that have taken place, it seems like that the game has still managed to sell quite well. The fact that that the game has been in the top three games on Steam by player count since launch is quite a feat itself, considering it’s a single-player game, and the top spots are usually occupied by multiplayer and esport titles. With CD Projekt Red promising that the console versions will be fixed pretty soon it remains to be seen how things pan out for the game.
