American video game company EA and game development studio Respawn Entertainment have announced the Apex Legends Global Series.

American video game company EA and game development studio Respawn Entertainment have announced the Apex Legends Global Series. It is the first official international multi-tournament esports competition for the battle royale game, with a $3 million total prize pool.

“Competition is at the heart of Apex Legends. We expect that esports will play a big role in the future of Apex Legends and it all starts here, with the Apex Legends Global Series,” said Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn Entertainment, in a press release. We look forward to seeing who, out of our millions of players, will become true legends of the arena.”

Players from over 60 countries will be eligible to form three-player squads. The trios will attempt to qualify for a total of 12 live events, through initial online competitions. There will be four Major tournaments hosted, with the first three consisting of 100 squads each. The last one will be the Apex Legends Global Series Championship, with 60 of the top teams clashing for a $1 million prize pool.

Competitors will be ranked based on their performance, based on accumulated kills and match placements. Through this, the trio teams will earn Apex Legends Global Series Points, along with invitations to the offline Majors and final event.

Players were first introduced to the official Apex Legends esports scene when Respawn placed a $500,000 prize pool up for grabs, at the Preseason Invitational. Each Major event will see the return of the same Match Point system, used at the Invitational, during the finals stage. By reaching a predetermined points threshold, teams can activate Match Point to expedite the game and take the win.

The first online event starts on January 25, 2020 and will have a Major qualification on the line.
