As reported by Korean Times, the makers of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds have filed a copyright infringement lawsuit back in January and now things are getting closer to a court to determine whether they have the right to do so.
The first interview about this topic was released in September and it was pointed out that the matter is not the similarities between the two battle royale games, but the fact that PUBG Corp fears that being PUBG based on Epic’s Unreal Engine, now the American developer might be less supportive in terms of technology and updates in order to not harm its title.
The timing of this move is at least interesting since Fortnite is going to be a protagonist at multiple net cafes in Korea in the next few days, as part of a collaboration with publisher Neowiz Games.
It’s also worth noting that, in the newest interview, Epic’s Tim Sweeney has stated that in his opinion there’s room for both PUBG and Fortnite in the battle royale/shooter genre.
“You buy one brand of vacuum cleaner, you’re not going to buy another one, because you only need one,” Sweeney told MCV. “But with games, if they’re two great games, people will play both.
“I don’t feel like products in the same genre are cut-throat competitors at all, I think they’re very complimentary and the work that we’ve done on Fortnite has benefitted PUBG and a huge array of other games,” he continued. “Namely the optimization that got us to 60fps on all console platforms, making the game work on mobile, all the streaming improvements and everything else required to support a game of this scale, it’s benefiting everyone.”
