If you have wanted to try Fallout 76 out but have been hesitant because of the criticisms and controversy around the game, you are in luck: the game is set to have a free trial weekend to coincide with its Update 16, starting on December 12.

From December 12-16, players will be able to hop into the game for free on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. During that weekend, a double XP event will also be active for all players to enjoy. This comes with the release of a batch of new content and updates being released on December 10.

Nuclear Winter, the game’s battle-royale mode, is getting the ability for players to choose between the two maps, Morgantown and The Forest, the latter of which is returning. Players have been asking for this option since Morgantown launched.

Another frequently-requested feature is coming to the game’s Private Worlds: solo play. Players will now be able to choose between two options for private servers: “Team Only” and “All Friends”. The former will allow players to create a server where only a team they have formed can play in, or as is wanted even more, the ability to play alone. “All Friends” will allow anyone on your Friend’s List to hop in and play with you on your server.

The game is also going to be getting festive during the season, with the Holiday Scorched Event beginning on December 12 and runs until December 26. During the event, Scorched enemies will appear across the map, dressed in holiday attire, including their own jingle bells sound. If you come across these enemies, you will be able to kill them and loot the holiday gifts they drop. These gifts range from low- to high-quality items, including lumps of coal.

For a limited time after the release of Update 16, you will be able to claim a free Santatron bot from the Atomic Shop. Build it at your C.A.M.P. and it will roam the surrounding area, collecting candy, toys, and coal. During the Holiday Scorched Event, the Santatron will also occasionally give you a gift.

For those who missed the game’s Halloween event a couple of months ago, the challenges and rewards will be returning in the form of the Nightmare Preceding Christmas, running from December 11-16. After this will be a Christmas challenge running from December 17 to January 7, which brings six new Christmas-themed Nuclear Winter challenges and cosmetic items.

Fallout 76 may not have had the kind of release and life that both Bethesda and fans had hoped it would, but a fairly steady release of updates, content, and patches, along with its own battle-royale mode, have given the game a fairly loyal playerbase. This update is the last planned update for the game with the big overhaul, Wastelanders, set to release sometime in early 2020, bringing human NPC’s to the game. We will have to see if this content is enough to tide over players, or draw in new ones, before that big release.

Fallout 76 is available now on PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
