During a recent episode of Pokénchi, a Japanese variety show, Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee director Junichi Masuda showed off brand-new information about the titles.
One of the biggest announcements from Masuda was that the games won’t include Hidden Machines (HMs). They’ll be replaced by a brand-new mechanic that’s never been in a Pokémon game before.
An HM is an item that teaches a Pokémon a move that can be used in the world to help players progress. One of these moves, for example, was Cut, which destroyed bushes that blocked important paths.
HMs were a mainstay in the Pokémon franchise until Pokémon Sun and Moon, where they were replaced with the Pokérider system.

Now, a new system has been introduced that will teach your Pikachu or Eevee, depending on your game choice, a selection of new moves to help you on your journey.
One of these moves, for example, is Diagonal Cut, which works like the aforementioned Cut HM. Water Walk is another new field move that replaces Surf, giving you the power to cross water. Using this move on a Pikachu will turn it into Surfing Pikachu, which was revealed during the show as well.
These moves reportedly won’t take up spots in your partner Pokémon’s movesets, however. Not much else is known about the system other than the initial news by Masuda, though, so there’s still a lot of information that needs to be revealed in the future.
