Sony’s PlayStation consoles are beloved by many fans, especially in Japan, for exclusive games ranging from genres like JRPGs and rhythm games. For many years now the PlayStation 3 has reigned supreme as king of consoles on the island nation. However, the unstoppable Nintendo Switch has now outsold the old but beloved console in Japan.

Reported by Nintendo Life and GoNintendo, the sales data for Japan has been released and the numbers say a lot for Nintendo’s hottest console. The PlayStation 3 has sold 10.25 million units throughout its lifetime, but the Switch just scraped by with 10.43 million units in Japan. With popular franchises like Mario and Pokémon releasing games not too long ago, Nintendo has been doing very well this time of year.

It might not seem like a big deal, since the PlayStation 3 has been an older console and succeeded by the PlayStation 4, this can be a problem for Sony unless the PlayStation 5 will do something the Nintendo Switch can’t. It won’t be too long until the Switch can catch up to the sold units for the PlayStation 4 internationally.

And with the holidays just around the corner, we can expect Nintendo to score a huge number of sales in the upcoming weeks.
