Pokémon Sword And Shield’s File Size Is 10.3GB

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

The file size for Pokémon Sword And Shield might seem big compared to previous games, but the size is still pretty concerning for not being a time-consuming game.

New information came out regarding Pokémon Sword and Shield has revealed the file size required for the Nintendo Switch. It will take up 10.3GB to download digitally. This might seem a massive step up compared to previous games’ gigabyte downloads, but when you compare the space needed for other games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and more, this looks to be a title that will not offer much in terms of content.

To compare previous Pokémon titles and their required space, here’s the list of them with the 3DS titles and the current Pokémon Switch title available:

  • X & Y: 1.7 GB
  • Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire: 1.8 GB
  • Sun and Moon: 3.2 GB
  • Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon: 3.6 GB
  • Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee: 4.1 GB

The fact that Sword and Shield have 6.2 more gigabytes compared to Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee shows that there will be a lot of content to enjoy, but this will entirely depend on how long the games’ main campaign will last and whether or not there will be an extensive postgame.

Game Freak is known not to release DLC for Pokémon games, but they do add patches if bugs/glitches are causing issues for players, such as the case with Lumiose City save glitch from Pokémon X and Y. If you do plan to buy one of the games digitally, they are not heavy with space.

So, 10.3GB is a huge step up compared to Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee, but it does leave a lot of concerns as other Switch titles require more. Pokémon Sword and Shield will be released worldwide on November 15th.
