PS5 is sold out in Japan, won’t launch in retail stores on day one

Sony confirms that those who didn't manage to score a pre-order will be out of luck.

According to Sony, PlayStation 5’s unit allocation has completely sold out in Japan, and there are no plans to sell additional, not pre-ordered consoles on November 12 in the region.

In a note, the platform owner’s Japanese division pointed out that “due to the high interest and many orders from users, the launch is sold out by the reserved amount.” This means there won’t be more units available at retail in Japan and, while it has not been confirmed, there’s a chance worldwide it could be the same.

Sony is also still concerned about COVID-19, which sees a return in multiple areas of the world, including Japan, which has forced the company to change its plans to grant consumers a safe launch.

“While there are still concerns about the spread of the coronavirus, we do not plan to hold events or sell PS5 at stores on the day of PS5 release in order to ensure the safety of customers, retailers, and staff,” shared Sony.

This confirms that PlayStation 5 has been met with great appreciation by customers in its pre-order’s phase, but also that units were a little sparse compared to demand. Even though players will have a tough time trying and purchasing a console this year, PS5 is still expected to sell 7.6 million units by March 2021.

PlayStation 5 is shipping with several launch titles, including Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls, the remake of the soulslike even showcasing a next-gen functionality available to PlayStation Plus subscribers.
