The blue blur joins the colorful simian cast.
With the release only a month away, Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD is revealed to have a surprise addition: Sonic the Hedgehog as a playable character. A list of achievements for the game lists Sonic by name twice.
It remains to be seen whether there will be anything particularly special about Sonic in the game besides the fact that according to another of the achievements it seems that he will not have multiple costumes, while the other playable characters certainly will.
One of the unique features of Banana Blitz in its original release was unique character abilities for each of the playable monkeys, so Sonic will almost certainly have one of his own, though precisely what remains to be seen.
It is currently unclear what, if anything, needs to be done to unlock Sonic in the game.
The game as a whole is shaping up to be a good one. Banana Blitz was a very well-received game in the franchise on its initial release in 2006, but the franchise has been in stasis for quite a while, with the last new release popping up back in 2014, and the last home console release way back in 2010.
The swap to Switch is likely to be interesting. The original Wii version controlled well enough, but everything Wii tended to be fiddly, while the Switch is much more responsive. The game will receive a release on Playstation 4 and Xbox One as well on its release on October 29, with a Steam release sometime later (currently listed as “Winter 2019”), but I feel the Switch version of the game will be the way to go; motion controls add a lot to game like this.
We’ll keep you updated on any other surprises the game has to offer as they appear.
