The Last Remnant Remastered was released in December 2018 for PS4, and most people assumed that was all we’d hear about this mostly forgotten Square Enix game for now. However, today at the Square Enix E3 press conference, a Nintendo Switch port of the 2008 game was announced. Even more surprising, it will be available for purchase on the eShop after Square Enix’s press conference tonight.

As the show was playing out on stage, Square Enix also released a short video called Inside The Last Remnant on the making of the game. The making-of video is available for free on YouTube. It includes interviews with The Last Remnant’s executive producer, art director, and director.

Like most Square Enix games, it has a well of deep lore and an intriguing world to dig into. The game’s website describes its story like this:

The world was at peace…or so it seemed. Who was to know such darkness lay in wait? The powers of the Remnants slowly began to change the world’s balance. A rift slowly formed between those who ruled and those who obeyed. This was the dawning of a new era — an era of countless frays that would be brought upon the world by those enslaved by their own lust for power. A thousand years later, the journey of one young man begins.

The Last Remnant may not be the best-received of Square Enix’s games (the original has a 66/100 on Metacritic and the PS4 remaster has a 70/100), but it’s an interesting experiment that still has its fans. It’s also packed with deep gameplay systems and a unique combat style that’s unlike anything else in Square Enix’s deep catalog of games.

In a show with appearances by the Final Fantasy VII remake and the PC port of Octopath Traveler, The Last Remnant Remastered is a strange choice that will probably go mostly overlooked, but Square Enix completionists and players who want to try something that’s radically different from anything else out there, this may just turn out to be a surprise hit.

No price for the game was announced at the show, but it’s available for $19.99 on PS4, so we would expect the Nintendo Switch version not to stray too far from that figure.
