PS3 Multiplayer Servers are now offline for The Last of Us, Uncharted 2, and Uncharted 3

I hope you got you kicks with Uncharted and The Last of Us on PS3, because the online is now offline.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, and The Last of Us all enjoyed their last days in the sun when it comes to online play on PlayStation 3, as all three games had their servers shut down today.

They might still be up for some, but Sony confirmed months ago that the servers would be shut down in early September, and August would be the cutoff date for players to enjoy those games on PS3 in an online capacity.

This is a trend recently with Sony, as they slowly begin to cut down the number of games in the PS3’s library that can still play online – at least from their first-party control. This is likely all in preparation for the launch of next-gen and the team wanting to tie up PS3 related services before another set of servers launch for next-gen.

The Naughty Dog trilogy that is being closed down means that online play for both Uncharted 2 and 3 are no longer playable in legal means. The Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection never had the online game modes, to begin with, so this is the end of that experience.

The PlayStation 4 port of The Last of Us does have multiplayer, so that can still be enjoyed by fans who want to go back to it.

Sony has a terrible habit of shutting down servers for games that aren’t causing issues. Of course, they take up resources, but for some fans, it is a great time to jump back in with some friends from time to time. From Gravity Rush 2 and now to these classics, no game is safe from Sony’s deactivating hand.

All games with online components will eventually fold to make way for newer titles, but it is still sad to see some media be lost to history as the servers close to never reopen again.
