Xenoblade Chronicles 2’s director, Tetsuya Takahashi, recently talked to Japanese publication Defifaminicogamer about the game’s development.
In the interview, Takahashi revealed that only 40 developers were working on the game while it was in development.
Monolith Soft’s developers were apparently split between two projects at the time. Fifty to 60 developers were helping Nintendo develop The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, while the others worked on Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
To put that number into context, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, another large open world action game created for the Nintendo Switch, had over 100 developers working it—which is nearly three times as many developers who worked on Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
It was worth it, however. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 reportedly sold an estimated 437,000 units in its first week, and it’s expected to sell more as time goes on.
